First Lines privacy policy
Last updated 6 October 2026
First Lines is a drawing journal for parents. Your child's drawings are some of the most personal things you can share with us, so we collect as little as we can, keep it in the EU, never sell it and let you delete it at any time. This page explains exactly what happens to your information, in plain English.
Who we are
First Lines is made by Milestone Studio ("we", "us"). We are responsible for your information (the "data controller"). For any privacy question or request, email [email protected].
Who the app is for
First Lines is for parents and carers of children aged about 18 months to 5 years. The app is used by the adult. Children don't have accounts and aren't meant to use the app themselves.
What we collect
About you
- Your account. When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name, email address and an account ID from them. We never see your password.
- Your choices. Which permissions you agreed to in the app, and when, so we can respect them.
About your child
- Drawings. The photos of drawings you add. The app removes location and device details from each photo before it leaves your phone, and keeps only the date it was taken.
- Drawing details. The date of each drawing, whether your child had help, what they drew with, and your child's age in months at the time.
- Results. The descriptions, drawing stages and play ideas the app creates for each drawing.
Your child's nickname and birth date stay on your phone. Our servers only receive a random ID for each child and their age in months. Please don't photograph your child's face or full name alongside a drawing.
Only if you turn it on
- Anonymous usage stats. Which screens are used, and crash reports when something breaks. These never include your child's name, drawings, photos or results.
- Research. Anonymised drawings we can use, with our paediatric occupational therapy advisers, to check and improve how accurate the descriptions are.
Both are off unless you choose them, and you can switch them off any time in Settings.
How we use it
- To keep your drawings and results so you can see them again.
- To describe each drawing with AI. Only the drawing image and the neutral details above are sent for analysis, never your child's nickname or your account details.
- To show how your child's drawing changes over time.
- To send reminders to draw, if you turn them on.
- To keep the service secure and working, and to answer you when you contact us.
We don't sell your information, show ads, build advertising profiles or share drawings with anyone else. Drawings are not used to train AI models.
Our legal reasons
Because drawings say something about a child's development, we treat them as specially protected data. We store and analyse them only with your explicit consent, which you give in the app and can withdraw at any time. We handle your account details to provide the service you asked for, and we keep basic security logs because we have a legitimate interest in protecting the service.
Where your information is kept
Your account, drawings and results are stored on Google Cloud in Frankfurt, Germany, in a private store that only our server can reach. Information is encrypted while it travels and while it's stored.
Who helps us
We use a small number of trusted companies to run First Lines. Each may only use your information to do this work for us.
- Google Cloud: hosting, storage and the AI that describes drawings (EU).
- Google and Apple: signing you in.
- Sentry: crash reports, only if you turn on usage stats (EU).
- PostHog: anonymous usage stats, only if you turn them on (EU).
- Resend: sending sign-in emails, if you sign in by email (EU).
How long we keep it
- Drawings and results: until you delete them, or delete your account.
- When you delete something, it's removed straight away. Copies in our backups disappear within 30 days.
- Security logs: 30 days.
Your rights
You can, at any time:
- delete a drawing, a child or your whole account from inside the app;
- withdraw any consent in Settings;
- ask us for a copy of your information, or to correct it;
- object to how we use your information, or ask us to limit it.
Email [email protected] and we'll reply within one month. If you're unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or the data protection authority where you live.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use your information, we'll update this page and, for important changes, tell you in the app before they take effect.
